GOOSEBEAKED WHALE (FORMALLY CUVIER'S BEAKED WHALE)

Ziphius cavirostris

EXPLORING THE ELUSIVE GOOSEBEAKED WHALES

Goosebeaked Whales (Ziphius cavirostris) are occasionally observed in the deep waters off Monterey, California, particularly in the Monterey Submarine Canyon, which provides an ideal habitat for these elusive deep-diving cetaceans. Known for their remarkable diving abilities, they can reach depths of over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) and remain submerged for more than 40 minutes, making them challenging to study and spot. In Monterey, they primarily feed on deep-sea squid, taking advantage of the region’s rich marine ecosystem. While sightings are rare due to their preference for offshore, deep-water environments, their presence highlights the area’s ecological diversity.
