Monterey Bay Whale Watch Map of Marine Mammal
Sightings in the Monterey Bay Region
June 1 - June 30, 1999
compiled by Richard Ternullo
Note: Gray Whales are not plotted on the chart. Numerous California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, and Southern Sea Otters are seen on all trips, and also are not plotted.
June has brought us the first Blue Whale sightings of the season and observations should increase during July. Gray Whales are seen sporadically from Pt. Sur to Santa Cruz. What their status is remains somewhat of a mystery for this time of year.
Pacific White-sided Dolphins remain the most abundant small cetacean. Killer Whales have been busy, with the latest Gray Whale kill recorded. This is probably due to the unusual Gray Whale migration pattern this year.
Next month sea surface temperatures should start rising and a larger variety of cetaceans will be possible.
