Marine Mammal Sightings Map (19K)

Note: Gray Whales were present throughout the area during this reporting period, and are not plotted on the chart. Numerous California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, and Southern Sea Otters are seen on all trips, and also are not plotted.

The Gray Whale southbound migration seems somewhat delayed by about a week. We will be looking forward to the sighting of the first confirmed northbound migrant. This event has been recorded in the past during the end of the first and second week of February. There are some sightings of very late Blue and Humpback Whales. These sightings may not be so unusual as perhaps some Blue Whales are present offshore in winter and Humpbacks were historically present in winter.

Among toothed whales, Long-beaked Common Dolphin continue to be the most frequently sighted. This should remain so for the next sighting period.

Click for daily sightings list 1/1 - 1/31/99 (corresponding to map above).

The sightings plotted above were compiled by Richard Ternullo for the period 1/1/99 to 1/31/99.

Sightings reported by Monterey Bay Whale Watch, H. Neece, J. Wettle, W. Williamson.
