Map of Marine Mammal Sightings in the Monterey Bay Region compiled by Richard Ternullo
The Gray Whale migration has reversed itself and on February 9 the first three northbounders were seen from the Highlands Inn. Two mother/calf pairs were observed on February 7 and February 8. These are very late and unusual sightings of what appeared to be newborns. About 500 California Sea Lions are present in Monterey Harbor, mostly resting in large rafts in the water. Pacific Harbor Seals and Southern Sea Otters have been observed from Monterey Harbor to Pt. Lobos and in Elkhorn Slough. Click for February 2003 daily sightings list (corresponding to map above). The sightings plotted above were compiled by Richard Ternullo for the period 2/1/03 to 2/28/03. Sightings reported by J. Aliotti, B. Cutting, D. Davi, Highlands Inn Staff, H. Tiura, T. Lorenz, Monterey Bay Whale Watch, H. Neece, L. Oliver, R/V Western Flyer. Copyright © 2003 R. Ternullo.
