Marine Mammal Sightings Map (20K)

Note: Numerous California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, and Southern Sea Otters are seen on all trips, and are not plotted on the chart.

This past recording period has experienced a confirmation that Monterey Bay may be the best place worldwide to see the greatest animal ever to live, the Blue Whale. Sightings have been consistent and nearly daily for some time now.

Humpback Whales seem to be wandering quite a bit and are less likely to be found on a predictable basis. However at least some are seen nearly every day.

We will now be entering the Oceanic Season and sightings should take on a more varied pattern. Look for observations of less common species to appear.

The jellyfish show has been first-rate on days with clear water with Purple Striped, Moon, Sea Nettle, and Egg yolk jellies in abundance.

The sightings plotted above were compiled by Richard Ternullo for the period 8/1/00 to 8/31/00.

Sightings reported by ACS Fund Raiser, Cheeseman's Ecology Tours, G. Fisher, L. Hitchcock, N. Lemon, Monterey Bay Whale Watch, H. Neece, Oceanic Society Expeditions, L. Oliver, R Ortiz, R/V John H. Martin, R/V Shana Rae, C&J Toney, J. Wetle, W. Williamson, T. Zoloniack.
